TL;DR
Google said Oct. 28 that ads in its chat-style AI Mode are expanding to 10 more countries, with ads also appearing in U.S. follow-up answers. The announcement came as Google Search & other revenue growth slowed to 12% in the third quarter; the company said lower monetization of AI Mode searches was one factor. The effect on website traffic and the independence of Google’s answer from its ads remain open questions.
The new markets for AI Mode ads are Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google said it plans to add Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom in the fourth quarter of 2026. In the U.S., ads can now appear not only alongside an initial AI Mode response but also in responses to follow-up questions.
Google describes AI Mode as a conversational search experience, distinct from AI Overviews, the summaries shown within ordinary search results. The company says ads in AI answers will be labeled “Sponsored.” Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible to appear, according to Google Ads Help. Advertisers do not get separate targeting or an opt-out for these placements, and reporting is provided in aggregate. Google’s AI may also generate short explanations beside ads that advertisers cannot edit.
At Alphabet’s third-quarter results, Search & other revenue reached $63.4 billion. The year-over-year growth rate was 12%, compared with 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler cited currency movements as the largest driver of the growth slowdown and said the lower monetization of AI Mode searches also had an effect. The revenue figures are confirmed company results; the explanation is Google’s account of what shaped them.

Where ads appear inside AI answers
Per Google’s help page and the 28 Oct post. The list “may not be exhaustive”.
Follow-up questions (“multiturn ads”): US only. Germany and the rest of the EU: not listed. Ads above or below AI Overviews can show wherever AI Overviews exist (200+ countries and territories).
Why now: Google Search & other revenue growth
Year over year, as reported by Alphabet. Bars scaled to 19%.
Q2 to Q3 2026: about +0.1%. Same months a year earlier: about +4.4% (my arithmetic). Google names exchange rates as the largest driver of the slowdown, and the “lower monetization” of AI Mode as one factor.

Ads Follow Search Into Conversations
The expansion brings advertising further into a search format where users ask longer questions and receive synthesized answers rather than a conventional list of links. For Google, it offers more opportunities to generate revenue from AI Mode as usage grows. The company says AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches, though that is a Google-reported comparison, not an independent measurement.
The change may also affect the balance between paid placements and visits to publishers. A 2026 working paper by Agarwal and Sen reported results from a randomized experiment involving 1,065 U.S. users: when AI Overviews appeared, clicks to websites fell by 39.8%, while clicks on ads showed no measurable change. That finding concerns AI Overviews, not the newly expanded AI Mode ads, and it does not establish what will happen to publishers’ traffic as the rollout grows.
For advertisers, the format offers access to placements inside AI answers but less control over how those placements are selected or explained. For users, the practical distinction is between an answer generated by Google’s AI and a labeled paid placement shown with it. Google says the ads do not influence the AI’s answer, but that assurance has not been independently audited in the source material.

From AI Overviews To AI Mode
Google has introduced AI-related advertising in stages. Ads in AI Overviews began appearing on mobile in the U.S. in October 2024, according to the company’s earlier announcements. In May 2025, Google brought them to desktop and began testing ads in AI Mode.
At Google Marketing Live in May 2026, the company also began testing formats including Conversational Discovery ads, which use Gemini to tailor ad text to a user’s question, and Highlighted Answers, which can place an ad within a list of AI recommendations. The Oct. 28 announcement extends AI Mode ads to more markets and adds placements in U.S. follow-up queries.
The financial backdrop is a moderation in Search revenue growth, not a reported decline in revenue. Search & other revenue was $63.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, $60.4 billion in the first quarter of 2026, $63.3 billion in the second and $63.4 billion in the third, according to Alphabet’s releases. These quarter-to-quarter totals fluctuate; the year-over-year growth rate fell to 12% in the latest quarter.
““The strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI mode.””
— Philipp Schindler, Google chief business officer
Traffic Effects And Ad Separation
Google has not disclosed how much revenue AI Mode ads currently generate, how many users see them, or how the new placements will affect click-through rates and publisher referrals. The company’s statement that ad and unpaid product-list click-through rates are similar refers to internal U.S. data from Aug. 20 to Sept. 3, 2026, and compares sponsored with organic product listings inside AI Mode. It does not measure clicks to websites or establish the effect of the international expansion.
It is also not clear whether the rollout will change the amount of traffic publishers receive. The cited experiment measured AI Overviews, rather than the new AI Mode placements, and its results cannot by themselves establish the effect of this announcement. Google says its ads do not affect the AI’s answer, but the material supplied for this report identifies no independent audit of that claim.
As of Oct. 29, Google’s help page lists 12 countries for ads inside AI answers, with English specified; Germany and other EU countries are not listed. The company has named the U.K., Brazil and Mexico for a later expansion, but further market dates and language availability were not specified.
Fourth-Quarter Market Expansion
Google said it plans to bring AI Mode ads to Brazil, Mexico and the U.K. in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has not provided more precise launch dates in the material available. The 10 newly announced markets are the immediate expansion, while U.S. users may encounter ads in AI Mode follow-up answers.
Advertisers and publishers will be watching for more information on campaign reporting, ad performance and referral traffic as the placements spread. Alphabet’s next financial results should provide another view of Search revenue growth, but the company has not said how separately it will report revenue from AI Mode advertising.
For users, Google’s stated signal is the “Sponsored” label. Whether the label is sufficient to distinguish paid placements consistently, and whether AI-generated answers remain independent of the ads shown alongside them, are matters not resolved by the rollout announcement.
Key Questions
Where is Google expanding AI Mode ads?
Google named Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. It said Brazil, Mexico and the U.K. are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
What are multiturn ads?
They are ads that can appear in answers to follow-up questions in AI Mode, rather than only alongside a user’s initial query. Google announced the U.S. launch on Oct. 28.
Why is Google expanding ads as Search growth slows?
Google said Search & other revenue grew 12% year over year in the third quarter, down from 17% in the second. The company cited exchange rates and lower monetization of AI Mode searches among the factors; it has not said the expansion alone will reverse the slowdown.
Can advertisers opt out of AI answer ads?
According to Google Ads Help, eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can participate, with no separate targeting control or opt-out for these placements. Performance is reported in aggregate.
How can users identify an ad in an AI answer?
Google says ads in AI answers will carry a “Sponsored” label. The company also says ads do not influence the AI-generated answer, but the source material does not identify an independent audit of that claim.
